Scarring: What Is It?

A scar is an area of fibrous tissue that can replace normal skin after an injury. One of the most common types of scarring is related to acne, these range in severity: Atrophic scars: Boxcar, Ice pick, and Hypertrophic and Keloid scars.

Boxcar Scars: Broad, usually box-like depressions with sharp, defined edges; often caused by widespread acne and chickenpox. Most often form on areas of the face where the skin is relatively thick; between the brows, lower jaw, and chin.
Icepick Scars: Smaller scars, more narrow indentations that point down into the skin surface; most common on cheeks.
Rolling Scars: Varying depth, with sloping, undefined edges that cause the skin to appear wavy, thick, and uneven; appear following severe bouts of acne.
Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars: Raised and dense in appearance, feel lumpy to the touch, occur due to excess build-up of scar tissue. Hypertrophic scars are the same size as the acne that caused them, Keloid scars create large scars that can expand beyond the acne injury.

Scars result from the biological process of wound repair in the skin, as well as in other organs and tissues of the body. Thus, scarring is a natural part of the healing process when an injury is severe enough to promote a scar.
