Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Post-Inflammatory Hyper-Pigmentation (PIH): What Is It?

Post-Inflammatory Hyper-pigmentation (PIH) is the proper name used to describe an increase of pigment to a specific area of the skin following an injury to the skin or inflammation. It is the skin’s natural response to inflammation. PIH usually looks like a flat area of discolouration on the skin. It is not pitted or raised and can range in colour from purple to brown or black, depending on your skin tone and the depth of discolouration. PIH develops when a wound or irritation, like a scrape, rash, burn or pimple, causes the skin to become inflamed. Following damage to either the epidermis (superficial layer of skin) or the dermis (dense, cell producing, inner layer of skin), the epidermis will begin stimulating melanocytes (melanin-producing cells) to synthesize melanin at an increased rate.

Melanin is the protein in the skin that gives it its colour and this excess melanin is what darkens and discolours the skin. While PIH generally remains after the wound has completely healed, steps may be taken to promote faster healing and fading of pigmentation. Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation is a distinct darkening of post-congestion spots or other sites of injury, which leave noticeable contrast between the site of inflammation and surrounding, unaffected tissue.

What Causes PIH?

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation is a natural part of the healing process; it’s the result of excess pigment gathering at the site of advanced congestion or wound once congestion has successfully cleared.

Who Can Experience Post-Inflammatory Hyper-Pigmentation?

Anyone can develop Post-Inflammatory Hyper-pigmentation, however it’s most common among clients challenged by congestion, especially those who have warm, olive or richly pigmented skin.

What Are The Most Effective Treatments?

Complexion Rehab uses a combination of laser wavelengths, which stimulate lymphatic flow, supporting the elimination of excess pigmentation. This process helps neutralize areas of concentrated melanin to the most common denominator, leaving skin appearance smooth to touch and visually balanced. Independently, or as a part of Complexion Rehab, Epidermal Spot Treatment can focus laser energy on areas requiring precision, such as post-acneic spots to minimize the contrast of melanic accumulation.

  • We Recommend:
    • Complexion Rehab
    • Epidermal Spot Treatment, especially as a part of Complexion Rehab
    • Tyrosinase Inhibitors: Kojic Acid, Azelaic Acid
    • Antioxidants: Vitamin C, Alpha Arbutin, Astaxanthin
  • The Benefits:
    • Complexion Rehab: This strategic application of spot treatment, combined with one or both wavelengths used during your 8-week journey will result in reduction and complete elimination in most cases of common Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation.
    • Active Skincare Ingredients: Responsive and proactive; in the case of Tyrosinase inhibitors, such as Alpha Arbutin + Kojic Acid, the production of melanin, or more specifically, the enzyme which catalyzes the production of melanin is neutralized, thereby “inhibiting” the overproduction of melanin that occurs as a natural part of the body’s healing response.
    • Antioxidants: Enhance the body’s efficiency, detoxify, and support environments in which healthy cellular turnover can occur and the shedding and repopulation cycles of skin and its collagen-building blocks can thrive. This results in faster processing of “healing” pigmentation.
