Rosacea: What Is It?

Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness and visible blood vessels to appear primarily in the cheek area, and less commonly covering the majority of the facial surface area. In more advanced cases mild, irritated texture or small, fluid-filled bumps may be present. The signs and symptoms of rosacea may appear for weeks to months at a time and then disappear for periods. TEWL (Trans-epidermal water loss) is a common occurrence in advanced cases, resulting in red, sensitive or irritated, flaky skin. Rosacea is not considered an infectious disease, and there is no evidence that it can be spread by contact with the skin or through inhaling airborne bacteria. The effectiveness of antibiotics against the symptoms of rosacea is widely believed to be due to their ability to reduce inflammation, rather than their ability to destroy bacteria.

What Causes Rosacea?

Although the exact cause of rosacea is unknown, various theories about the origin of rosacea have evolved over time. Facial blood vessels may dilate (enlarge) too easily, and the increased blood near the skin surface makes the skin appear red and flushed. Various lifestyle and environmental factors can encourage this inflamed response. Acne-like bumps and texture may appear, often in the more inflamed area of the central face. This may be due to factors related to blood flow, skin bacteria, microscopic skin mites, irritation of follicles, sun damage of the connective tissue under the skin, an

abnormal immune or inflammatory response, and according to some research, psychological factors.
