Hyper-pigmentation occurs due to an increase in the number of pigment-producing cells in the skin, or the pigmented substance they produce (melanin). Warmer-toned and darker skin tones are more likely to be affected, however, pigmentation can affect all skin types. Not all forms of pigmentation are brought about by sun exposure, as some cases may be triggered by pregnancy, hormonal medication, and changing hormonal levels. You may also see pigmentation as a secondary symptom of inflammation.
